"The Negotiation Playbook" by Glin Bayley is an important book. It captures, better than any other book on the subject that I have read, the critical elements of an everyday activity that few of us are even consciously aware that we do: negotiate. What sets the book apart is that it is just as relevant to business people as it is to parents, teachers, friends...........anybody in fact, as it breaks down the importance of persuasion and influence, laced with insightful and wise examples of emotional intelligence. The fact that all of us, all of the time should be looking to better control and steer our interactions with everyone we come into contact with means that Glin's text is critical and timely. Highly recommended.
More than a well-organized negotiation skills roadmap, Glin Bayley has delivered a playbook for negotiation as a transformative pathway to becoming a more complete, peaceful, satisfied human. This is negotiation from inside (you) to outside (others and the world, including the fallacy of fairness). It blends the practical, the analytical, and the holistic all in one place. With handy TLDR lists and charts to end chapters, it can be scrutinized, skimmed, spot-read randomly, and revisited - flexible and agile (as negotiation ought to be) for many reading approaches.
There are individuals you meet who realise you need to spend more time with because their perceptions and insights of others are unparalleled and they have this uncanny ability to ‘read the room’ and ‘read people’. This. Is. Glin. When that is used for good in the business, you can ensure that what you want to achieve can land. That’s what its all about isn't it? You know you have a concept or a proposal that could be a winner, but how can you help others come to the party. Glin is the ‘go to’ person who finds ways to bring people together, open up avenues of thinking and alternative conversations that you never knew was needed and along the way, each have crafted mutually beneficial and winning strategy. At a personal level Glin is the easiest person to share and talk with. At a professional level, there is none like her. She elevated our ability to find talent in alignment with our core values through helping us develop key business propositions. Thank you for your expertise that has helped us secure and grow a great team!
“The Negotiation Playbook” is a must read for anyone who wants to influence better, expanded my insights into the world of commercial and everyday negotiation. The essence of this book, for me, is the way in which Glin translates “boardroom negotiation” to “everyday negotiation”. The simple fact is that an understanding of negotiation is less about “winning the deal” and more about how you live your life – negotiation really does occur every day - with family, friends, and even oneself. Glin expertly breaks down the key drivers within negotiation in a way that is relatable, concise, and focuses on VALUE for all sides. You will not only learn more about negotiation, but you will expand your skills in leadership, self-awareness, and emotional intelligence. This really is a book for everyone.
I was faced with a challenging situation earlier this year when a trusted partnership deteriorated. Glin was a pillar of support during this difficult time. She dedicated time to understand my situation and needs, while also providing insight into the other party's mindset and tactics. Glin's guidance was crucial; she not only helped me achieve what I needed but also connected me with a lawyer to navigate the ensuing legal battle. I am immensely grateful for her knowledge and support, and I cannot recommend her highly enough for anyone in need of expert negotiation support.
Thanks for your insightful book on negotiation tricks of trade. Growing up in Kenya, negotiation or "haggling" was a daily experience expected of us in any transaction, monetary or otherwise. People would frown upon you for buying anything without some form of tussle. Moving to Australia taught me the opposite, never to question the pricing on things, its considered rude and unwelcome. As a migrant kid back then, i learnt to play by the rules of the land. I've seen the same experience in the early chapters of your book with your mother. Thanks for bringing this experience back to the surface and legitimizing why negotiation is in everyday life. I picked up your book when researching necessary skills to acquire a small business, having worked as an employee for over 17yrs. It's time to venture out and explore other challenges in life, in my case - buy a small-medium sized private business. I see how negotiation playbook intersects well in the whole journey of research, relationship building, contract agreement table and life after acquisition. Thank you so much in sharing your experience with the world, more so sensitising the concept of negotiating as a core daily practice. Attached is a photo/receipt of the book i picked up as one of my Christmas present on the journey to understanding small business acquisition in Australia. Thanks Again Lutta
